As the CEO of the New York State Society of CPAs, I find myself continually inspired by the dynamic and ever-evolving landscape of our profession. This inspiration was vividly rekindled at the 22nd Annual Baruch Financial Reporting Conference, an event that included speakers from the SEC, PCAOB, and FASB, as well as financial statement preparers, auditors, and users. The conference has long been a cornerstone for our community, offering invaluable insights into the future of professional practice and regulation. The CPAJ team was there, and this issue includes our coverage of the conference.

This issue of CPAJ focuses on tax planning, and various facets that CPAs must be mindful of when working in this vital sector of practice. Tax laws are always in flux, and anticipating the impact of planned or predicted changes in the law requires foresight. Smart tax planning not only tries to anticipate the future; it also incorporates the flexibility needed to reverse course when circumstances require. Individuals and organizations are now required to rethink their tax strategies. Even more importantly, CPAs must be at the forefront in the minds of clients, be they individuals, small businesses, or multinational corporations, serving as the “quarterback” when a strategy is conceived and adopted, even when other professionals are needed to help implement and execute the plan. Building trusted relationships is paramount. The opportunities and challenges can be significant; navigating the landscape requires current expertise as well as a deep, nuanced approach.

Lastly, beyond the importance of taxation and the Baruch conference, I look to the CPAJ columns to provide updates in diverse areas of practice, including estate and retirement planning, sustainability, cybersecurity, and technology.

An ever-shifting landscape and an ever-evolving profession requires an openness to change. We are proud to provide the analysis and commentary you need through the CPA Journal, as well as the rest of the Society’s publications and social media. Look to us to keep you engaged and informed.

Ever Upward!
